Emèl - handmade project

Emèl is a social tailoring workshop established in 2020 in Diani, on Kenya’s southern coast.

The workshop is the natural continuation of the vocational training programme offered by the Mama Lorenza’s Vocational Centre.

The Emèl team is made up of the most talented graduates from the Tailoring and Leathercraft course: young women who, after completing their studies, find here their first real job, their first salary, and a genuine opportunity to build an independent future.

For many of them, Emèl is much more than a workshop. It is a safe space where they can grow, collaborate, continue learning, and imagine a different future.

Their work allows them to support their families, help younger siblings stay in school, live independently, and gain the freedom to choose their own path.

Having an income also means having time, opportunities, and independence. It means being able to build a future based on aspirations rather than necessity.

Every product tells this story: a story of dignity, craftsmanship, and new opportunities.

Because at Emèl, we believe in a life full of colour—free, creative, and full of possibilities.

The project was co-funded by FOSIT through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) federal fund.

Truly Made in Africa

The heart of Emèl beats in Africa.

It lives in the colours of the fabrics, the hands of our artisans, the traditional craftsmanship, and the stories woven into every creation.

We proudly celebrate Made in Africa as a symbol of quality, identity, and innovation.

Our fabrics are carefully selected from local markets and shops, while many decorative details are inspired by Maasai craftsmanship and traditions.

For us, Made in Africa is not a trend—it is a different way of telling the story of the continent: one that moves beyond stereotypes and highlights people, skills, creativity, and the value of artisan work.

In February 2025, Emèl was officially authorised to manufacture and export products bearing the Made in Kenya logo (www.makeitkenya.go.ke)

What we create

Emèl offers several product collections, all united by the same commitment to craftsmanship, carefully selected materials, and the meaningful stories behind every piece.

In Kenya, we collaborate with hotels, restaurants, businesses, schools, and private clients, creating linens, accessories, uniforms, and bespoke products tailored to different needs.

Through these partnerships, our workshop strengthens its connection with the local community while creating new employment opportunities.

Emèl Limited Edition

Our signature collection.

Emèl Limited Edition features contemporary handbags crafted from genuine leather and carefully selected African fabrics.

Each collection is produced in limited quantities, as the availability of fabrics naturally determines the number of pieces that can be made.

Once a fabric is gone, it is not restocked—making every bag unique and impossible to reproduce.

Ethical Fashion Without Compromise

From the very beginning, we made one clear choice: to create products that people would choose first and foremost for their quality.

The social mission behind Emèl is an essential part of who we are, but it never replaces the importance of design, research, and skilled craftsmanship.

Every product is carefully handmade in small batches, avoiding unnecessary waste while embracing a more sustainable way of producing.

Our commitment to small-scale artisan production means:

  • reducing waste
  • making the most of every material
  • ensuring exceptional quality and attention to detail
  • creating a direct connection between the people who make our products and those who choose them

Our production is not industrial—it is human.

And that is precisely why every piece is unique.

We believe in a slower, more conscious, and more sustainable approach to fashion—one that respects the people who create each product, those who wear it, and the communities where it is made.

Choosing Emèl means becoming part of a larger story.

It means supporting a project that places dignified work, education, and the opportunity for an independent future at its heart.

It also means embracing a different vision of fashion, where quality and ethics are inseparable.

We are a young project, still growing and evolving.

Our resources are limited, but our vision is clear: to grow together with the people who are part of this journey without ever losing our identity.

Every product, every partnership, and every customer becomes part of this story.

Every accessory reflects the strength of the women who created it and the value of a fashion industry that truly puts people first.
